He attended Louisiana State University on a four year Tennis Scholarship and was a playing member on their 1976 SEC Championship Team. After college, he played the professional tennis circuit and held an ATP world ranking in 1978-1979. From 1980 to 1990, Billy owned and operated a professional sports promotion and management company which produced over 50 major sporting events, two of which included both Bjorn Borg\u2019s &amp; Chris Evert\u2019s final retirement tour nights.<\/p><p>In 1990, he turned his attention to the fledgling Arena Football League helping to start and managed six (6) different AFL teams in the cities of Orlando, Tampa, New Orleans, Nashville, Atlanta and Charlotte. His team(s) appeared in seven playoffs, four Arena Bowl Championship games and won two Arena Football League Championships. For his commitment to excellence, the Arena Football League awarded Billy with their most prestigious award, The AFL Founder\u2019s Award.<\/p><p>In 1998, Billy McGehee became President, CEO and Governor of the National Hockey League\u2019s Tampa Bay Lightning and the Ice Palace Arena (now Amalie Arena).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c3208b4 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"c3208b4\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-183b58f e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"183b58f\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8b16e9c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8b16e9c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Today, Billy travels extensively as the Founder and Chairman of the Board for his Charity, ATHLETES FOR AMERICA, www.athletesforamerica.org. AFA is a national emergency preparedness organization started immediately following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Its Mission is to train every high school, college and professional athlete in the life saving skills of CPR and how to use an AED, raise national awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and to donate Automated External Defibrillators (AED) to as many schools and sports organizations and facilities as possible.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ed6fd59 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"ed6fd59\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/athletesforamerica.com\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"136\" height=\"145\" src=\"https:\/\/bmwopb2.vittetow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/afa-logo.png\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-117\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Founder Bio Billy McGehee was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1954.
